Each listing on the calendar starts off with the closest largest city, if the event is not nationwide, so you can see at a glance if the event is applicable to you. The arrow in the upper right of the calendar screen gives you a dropdown key of calendar subjects by color, so you can narrow the calendar down to show only events that are important to you.

This calendar is a free, great, public place to list your artistic, social, political, or scientific event. Here's how:

MASSACRE MUSIC: INDIE BEATS LABEL FROM MICHIGAN

An old friend of mine from high school -- apparently now going by Tkali, so I won't disclose the origin of those initials from the days of yore -- has started up a record label for beats, hip-hop, rap, dj-style material called Massacre Music out of Michigan. The label is fledgling, but in the true spirit of networking, just check it out, listen to the samples, offer up advice, buy a CD or DVD, and support indie music.

Chuck Berry, the 81-year-old Father of Rock & Roll, famous for hits such as "Johnny B. Goode," "Maybellene," "Roll Over, Beethoven," and "Memphis," will come to Boston to headline the show. He will perform with members of the SUPERGROUP, a group of rockers together on stage for the first time just for this special concert event. The SUPERGROUP includes keyboardist Chuck Leavell and saxophonist Tim Ries of The Rolling Stones; drummer Simon Kirke of Bad Company; drummer Chad Smith of The Red Hot Chili Peppers; bassist John Conte of Crown Jewels; guitarist Ricky Byrd, formerly of Joan Jett and The Blackhearts; guitarist Barry Goudreau, formerly of Boston; guitarist Marc Orrell, formerly of The Dropkick Murphys; guitarist and vocalist Kate Taylor; guitarist Jeff "Skunk" Baxter of Steely Dan and The Doobie Brothers; drummer Woody Giessmann of the Del Fuegos; hot young vocalist Tim Pike; tenor saxophonist David Arteaga; and local Boston-area legends: tenor saxophonist John Aruda, trombonist Jeff Galindo, and trumpeter Scott Aruda, along with a rocked-out vocal section featuring Rosemary St. George, Dana Shellmire, and Erin Vulgamore. Members of the SUPERGROUP will perform together at this concert to support a cause close to their hearts. Drummer Simon Kirke lost friend and Free bandmate Paul Kossoff to drug-induced heart failure in 1976. Drummer Chad Smith joined the Red Hot Chili Peppers in the wake of former member Hillel Slovak's drug overdose in 1988, and observed band mate Anthony Kiedis' battle with addiction throughout their careers together.

It was in February of 1998, when a rag-tag band of face-wearing aliens masquerading as homosapien funk-trance musicians congregated for the first time at the suitably reptilian environs of the Lizard Lounge for a night of ceremonial brew haha. Hahaha, indeed! Fast forward 10 years later, and here we are, still at it. Proving the sayers of nay wrong, and confounding and delighting multitudes along the way, Club d'Elf prepares to celebrate a decade of queasy listening with a show to end all shows. Seriously, this one is going to be one to travel back in time and tell your ancestors about over a frothy cup of some foul-tasting beverage w/ a taint of the eternal.

The advance tickets are all sold out, but don't say we didn't warn you! There will be, however, about 35 or so tickets available first come/first served at the door for each show. We wish we could accommodate everyone, but the place only holds 110. We will be multi-track recording the show, so if you can't get in or live too far away, you'll be able to enjoy the festivities - at least the music - at a later date.

I wish that I had time to write a more fitting essay about what the past 10 years have been like, but I don't, and you have better things to do anyway. However, I would like to offer some well-deserved thank you's: first of all, to all of the incredible musicians with whom I have had the great privilege & honor to share the stage these past 10 years; to Billy Beard for offering us a gig and providing a forum for our semi-regular, non-denominational revival meetings; to the Lizard staff, past and present and imaginary, who have made us feel so at home and forgiven us for the times when we felt TOO at home; and to all of the people including YOU who have supported us and come out to the shows, and maybe even bought a CD or two. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. From the bottom of my black little heart, I am truly & deeply humbled. All right, brushing tears aside, onward.

ARTOPIA BRINGS ALL-AGES STREET FAIR ART TO SEATTLE

Artopia is an all-day, all-ages, outdoor event in support of local artists that takes place in Seattle's Georgetown neighborhood. Last year's edition included such attractions as Hazard Factory's Power Tool Drag Racing, the Flight To Mars Birthday Cake, a child friendly carnival midway, live music, and some funky gallery shows.

Artopia '08 lands on Saturday, June 28th, 2008, and Ignition Northwest has decided to get behind it all the way in an effort to have a Burning Man-style art extravaganza that is all-ages. Thumbnail sketch: they're going to take over one "zone" of the fair with their own stage, theme camps, and art. And they're putting their money where their [collective] mouth is, with grants for artists and theme camps. Now, they need YOU.

The first step to getting involved is to join the conversation. Make sure you're on SEAVENT, the public event planning list for Seattle-area Burning Man and art-related activities.

HONK FESTIVAL COMING TO SEATTLE NEEDS YOUR HELP

HONK! WEST, a special event coming to Seattle, March 21 - 23 (Easter weekend), 2008, with 17 activist street bands from five states and Vancouver converging on the cafes, taverns, and streets of Ballard and Georgetown, Washington.

HONK! is a gathering of street musicians for mutual support and appreciation, musical inspiration, forging and deepening human connections. And hopefully, raising public consciousness of the value of this music in our communities.

HOW YOU CAN HELP #1

We have found housing so far for over 60 musicians, and now we have news that one more fabulous band, from NYC, will be coming as well:

CAN YOU OFFER THESE PUPPIES A HOME?

The Hungry March Band is bringing 15 musicians, all needing a place to crash for the weekend. If you or anyone you know can help out with this, please let Lesli know (include your address). Ideally, HMB will all be in one huge house/yard, somewhere in the Wallingford/Fremont/Ballard area. But we will be grateful to find two houses near each other, in any neighborhood.

The musicians will generally be participating in HONK activities from 10 a.m. to midnight, so there is little hosting required besides providing a place to sleep and perhaps shower. Hosts will have passes to the indoor shows and 15 new friends.

HOW YOU CAN HELP #2

Please come help us cook or help out in the kitchen for a meal.

Ballard Odd Fellows Hall will be our hospitality center, where we will offer 100+ musicians three meals a day. Friday dinner, Saturday lunch and dinner, and Sunday brunch (probably pot-luck) all need helpers.

OTHER WAYS:

A truck or van with driver, willing to help see that folks get to their host houses safely after the shows, or to do an airport pick-up, or to help carry us all from Ballard to Georgetown Saturday evening.

All volunteers, of course, will have passes to the indoor shows and are welcome to join us for meals and workshops.

On Saturday, February 23, 2008, soulful duo Dwight & Nicole (Dwight Ritcher & Nicole Nelson) celebrate the lives of legends Ray Charles & Betty Carter with an evening of music at the Regattabar, Harvard Square, MA, for two shows: 7:30 & 10:00 p.m. Tickets are $18.00.

In 1961, Ray Charles invited (then-unknown) jazz singer Betty Carter into the studio for a live recording of 12 love songs. The result was a groundbreaking 78-minute collection of duets. "The inspiration was contagious," claimed the album producer (and longtime Charles collaborator), Sid Feller. Now, 47 years later, NYC soul duo Dwight & Nicole will honor Ray and Betty, joined by an all-star group, including Tom West on piano, John Lockwood on bass, Marty Richards on drums, Jeff Galindo on trombone, and John & Scott Aruda on tenor saxophone & trumpet, respectively. Expect to hear renditions of classic duets such as "Baby, It's Cold Outside" and "People Will Say We're in Love," as well as Betty's hit "Mean To Me," and Ray's ubiquitous "Night Time is the Right Time."

Fans of Dwight Ritcher & Nicole Nelson may recall a time when they each fronted their own popular bands earlier in the decade. Forging their way up from pubs to theaters, they played music at a level which belied their years. Dwight Ritcher, a New Jersey native, moved to Boston and formed the Dwight Ritcher Band. The singer/songwriter & guitarist tapped his deep blues and funk roots to front a high energy, horn-driven group, eventually recording two highly acclaimed, if not chart-topping albums; Drive Around Town and Radioman. Often sharing the stage with such greats as Otis Rush, Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, and Buddy Guy, Ritcher carved out his own musical niche and gained a loyal fan base.

Rising up at the same time from a crowd of Boston area vocalists was Nicole Nelson. A standout soul singer from the start, described as "Magnificent" by Maya Angelou, and "A voice for the ages" by the Boston Phoenix; Nelson and her band churned out crowd-crushing Etta James & Aretha covers during the first half of her 7-year career. Over time, she developed her own unique sound as a songwriter. After a move back to her hometown, Brooklyn, NY, in 2004, Nelson teamed up with Ritcher. Blending their voices to create a very original music; the Dwight & Nicole duo was formed.

The versatility of their current incarnation allows them the luxury of creative options. Some live shows reveal a stripped down duo, just Ritcher's guitar and Nelson's percussion supporting their rich vocals and carrying the crowd. Other shows find them fronting full big bands together, 1940's style. The latter is like stepping into a time warp- no strangers to jazz & swing, Dwight & Nicole recall Jimmy Rushing & Ella Fitzgerald. For fans of that musical era, this is a show to catch. A closer listen reveals inflections of Patsy Cline, BB King, Johnny Cash, & Nina Simone. And of course, the real magic is in that non-definable extra something; the element of surprise which keeps the music fresh and very alive: a necessary ingredient when interpreting the songs of such personalities as Ray Charles & Betty Carter.
