SEATTLE RECYCLING GETS EASIER AND GREENER
This time next year, city leaders say, Seattle residents will be able to toss meat and dairy scraps into yard-waste containers and quit separating recyclable materials under new solid-waste contracts.
The new solid-waste collection contracts with Waste Management Inc. and Seattle-based newcomer CleanScrapes bring these changes in garbage and recyclables services:
- All single-family homes will be offered weekly instead of the current biweekly food and yard-waste collection, which will include for the first time meat and dairy scraps. The food waste will be turned into compost for local parks and gardens. That is expected to halve the 45,000 tons of food waste annually going to landfills.
Residents who don't pay for yard-waste pickup could dump food scraps into a sealable container.
- Recyclable glass no longer will have to be separated from recyclable paper and plastics, and more kinds of plastics -- including plastic cups and deli containers, but not foam -- will become recyclable.
- The new collection contracts will expand the city's Dumpster-Free Alley plan, which is designed to cut illegal activity around trash bins and reduce waste in alleys and business areas.
- Sixty percent of the collection trucks will run on a bio-diesel blend, and 40 percent will run on compressed natural gas, expected to dramatically reduce pollutants.

WOODWORK MARKET OF HANDMADE WOODCRAFTS IN SEATTLE
Woodworking Market of woodwork crafts of all kinds on April 5th, 2008, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Wood Construction Center campus, located at 2310 South Lane Street, Seattle, WA, 98144, one block south of 23rd and Jackson.It will feature fine woodworking (including furniture, jewelry boxes, toys, frames, turned wine stoppers, etc.), and probably some other fine crafts (last time they had a great selection of handmade pottery). Everything is made by students or alumni of the Wood Construction Center, including an amazing artist friend of the co-op, Michelle, who took the woodworking class. So go out and support the arts of all kinds!

SEATTLE OBAMA FANS: YOUR CHANCE TO BE IN A COMMERCIAL
Renowned Seattle indie filmmaker and artist, Carey Christie, returns again, with YOUR chance to be in an Obama commercial, as she co-produces the spot for MoveOn.Org's latest political campaign project.
Austin Wilson from More Dust Than Digital will be directing the commercial that is 30-seconds long and must show Barack Obama in a positive light. Austin says he is inspired by Barack's ideas and has been anxious to do something creative to endorse his campaign. Their idea is simple and awesome and involves A LOT of people -- people like you who are supporting Barack Obama and want to make a difference [we will not reveal his commercial idea, just to be safe in the face of copycatters, but Austin will be more than happy to share the idea with you, himself]!
The film idea needs a crowd, and "the crowd" is where you come in:
They have the location: Roosevelt High School's new amazing theater (Seattle). They have the date: Thursday, March 27, 2008. Now they just need YOU. They want as many people as possible, different ages, different ethnicities, male and female.
Two separate call times:
5 p.m. to 7 p.m. - small but diverse group for "pick-up" shots, like close ups, etc. (10 people)
7 p.m. to 9 p.m. - crowd (40 +)
Please forward this note along to anyone that you think might be interested in being a part of this project. THORN TO BE WILD: YOUNG FILMMAKERS HELP OUT NATURE
Carey Christie, filmmaker and Captain Awesome of all things artistic in Seattle, has just finished the editing of an amazing film project overseeing high school students filming, editing, and producing a nature documentary about the efforts of the Nature Consortium (featuring Restoration Project Coordinator and nature extraordinaire, buphalo) to reintroduce biodiversity in the Duwamish greenbelt of Seattle. There will probably be several screenings of the film, called Thorn To Be Wild, around the Seattle area in the coming months, and it is sure to make news as eco-everything creeps more and more into the mindset of everyone. Shown here are the rough cut and the "making of," both available on YouTube; the final cut will be available on YouTube shortly.

PUBLIC EVENTS CALENDAR AND ACTIVITIES LISTINGS

The idea behind the public events calendar [see it] is that it is a directory of events for you, of you, by you. We want your artistic events, so let us know what is happening in your area, no matter how big or small.
Each listing on the calendar starts off with the closest largest city, if the event is not nationwide, so you can see at a glance if the event is applicable to you. The arrow in the upper right of the calendar screen gives you a dropdown key of calendar subjects by color, so you can narrow the calendar down to show only events that are important to you.
This calendar is a free, great, public place to list your artistic, social, political, or scientific event. Here's how:

Send in as many as you want (but please check to see if they are already listed, first! No repeats!)

Pillowfight at 3 p.m., then seeing as people will be loitering about anyway, hit the pubs! Create mayhem and chaos downtown! Confuse locals and tourists alike! Make total asses of yourselves! Get arrested and spend the night in the drunk tank! No wait, scratch the last one.
So, you may be asking yourself, what do I need to do to prepare myself? Well, it's not rocket science, people; get yourself some ears and a tail at the very least (special prizes for best bunny outfit), and it would be helpful to learn the bunny hop. Here's instructions for the slackers out there.
That is all the info I know.

THORN TO BE WILD: YOUNG SEATTLE FILMMAKERS MAKE AN ENVIRONMENTAL DIFFERENCE
THORN TO BE WILD, the short film commissioned by the Nature Consortium [an organization working hard to restore Seattle's largest forests] and produced and directed by a team of high-school students is being screened at Youngstown Cultural Arts Center in Seattle, WA, on Saturday, March 22, 2008. 7 p.m. PST. No cover charge.
There will be live music by the band The Lonely Forest and, of course, cupcakes :). They will screen the short (10 min) and a "making of" edited together by the students (6 min). The students will conduct a Q&A session at the end of the screening, and music will follow for the rest of the evening.
