NEW TWITTER PROFILES

We have two new profiles on Twitter. One that is a quick update list of new items and new features on our website and with our company: twitter.com/altcurrent. And the other is a listing of links, much the same as our Daily Crack, in fact, it can be found at twitter.com/daily_crack, and it will contain nothing but weird, random, political, social, etc. links of all kinds; the Twitter profile layout lends itself perfectly to this sort of link listing. If you are a Twitter fan, become a follower and check out the fun.

HELP US OUT BY DIGGING US

Love Alternating Current? Want to spread the infection like the virus that it is? Then Digg us. We have installed a new Digg button in our sidebar and on our individual posts. Here's how it works for the technologically-declined:

If you like our entire page, click the Digg "submit" button in the SIDEBAR.

If you like an individual blog post, click on the TITLE of that post, so the blog post is given its own page and url, and then click the individual Digg "submit" button within that post. This is important to do if you are just trying to Digg a certain post, so the individual url is what gets "dugg."

The more people who Digg us, the more people find out about us, so help a brutha out, huh?

ALTERNATING CURRENT ADDS A FEW MORE SOCIAL NETWORKING SERVICES TO THE LIST

You can now find us on a few more social networking services. Although our profiles may still be a bit sparse and incomplete in their fledgling stages, feel free to check out our pages, add us as a friend, subscribe to our feeds, etc. We can now be found on:

NEW ACTIVITIES FEATURE

In our efforts to keep this blog current, important, and a source of reliable and instant information, we are making a necessary and cool change to one of our sidebar navigation links. The link for "Activities," which used to list all activities - past, present, and future - that had been marked with that label, is now only going to feature fresh and current activities. Once an activity has happened, we will remove the label "Activities" from the post, and it will no longer show up under "Activities." This will enable everyone to check out what's happening right now, instead of being bogged down with events that have already happened and having to fork through the current and past ones. Each post will still come up under its other labels, so the post will definitely not disappear completely from navigation, but this change will enable the "Activities" link to become a more vital part of the underground events scene.

POSTS FOR SEATTLE, BOSTON, AND MICHIGAN

For those who don't know our history and are wondering why Seattle, Boston, and Michigan are getting all the posting love - and why they are the only ones with actual sidebar navigation links - here is the 411.

We started as little spuds in Michigan - Lansing and Detroit area - where we took over the scene with our company back in 1994. In 2004, we moved the whole bad ass machine to Seattle, where we made some of the most amazing connections on this lovely planet. This past September, 2008, we just moved the machine across the country again, this time to the Boston/Cambridge area, where we have set up shop, probably permanently, on the East Coast.

We have loved and supported many artistic movements throughout our time, but none moreso than our original and adopted hometowns. And we will continue to lend our voices and support to the art movements in those areas, seeing as a large majority of our own supporters come from those regions.

We do and will support people from everywhere, every walk of life, every art endeavor. But, going back to our roots and staying true to our past, Seattle, Boston, and Michigan will be the only places with their own sidebar navigation links on this blog.

End of story. Glad you asked.

ABOUT ALTERNATING CURRENT

On our progress today for the new website, we have been working on the Alternating Current home page, making it complete with information that you might want to know about our company. We have completed our mission statement, the "about us" page, and information about our company name and why we chose it. I have listed the basic paragraphs here, if anyone is interested in reading them and just can't wait until the website is constructed.

MISSION STATEMENT:

The mission of the Alternating Current Arts Co-op is to bring fresh, innovative art projects of all kinds from the small stream to the mainstream to a world that desperately needs it, while always providing the lowest prices, the most exposure, the best networking, and the most updated information we can possibly offer; to make art more than a luxurious afterthought; and to provide artists of all kinds with the opportunity to promote themselves.

ABOUT US:

Alternating Current Arts Co-op has been around for almost a decade and a half, bringing you powerful, thought-provoking, and life-changing art and artistic endeavors. We encompass all that exists in the arts, from music to writing to photography to d.i.y. projects to apparel to theater to anything in between.

We are here to challenge you to create new and bold art; then to give you an outlet to mainstream that art to a larger audience. We distribute, produce, market, sell, and love innovative, fresh, controversial, and important creative works and social/political commentaries of all kinds. Sticking to the give-a-man-a-fish theory, our belief in helping you help yourself is what makes our co-op a unique and necessary resource for artists. We give you the tools to make yourself successful, which will not only give you a better sense of accomplishment, but will also further your feeling of community, while connecting you to other artists who value art the same as you (and we!) do.

Alternating Current began in 1994, first under the Detroit-based Broadway Kids Productions, then the Chicago-based Spy Kids Productions (yes, prior to the ridiculous movie!), then the Seattle-based Indie Arts Co-op, changing as we transitioned through time and puberty and high school and college and cities and interests and hobbies. We are Boston/Cambridge-based pseudo-adults now, with arts and sciences backgrounds, who have merged the best of both worlds to form a name that encompasses a whole spectrum of different meanings and evokes beautiful, intense, and passionate imagery: Alternating Current.

The new website is going to be huge; as our expansive world dominance of the arts and social awareness grows, so, too, does our website. We have tried to make it as navigable as possible, but we are well aware that it contains an enormous amount of information that will probably not be entirely consumed by your mind in one sitting. So we invite you to come back. Over and over. Check out what's new, from our news blog to political events to our ongoing calendar to our discussion forum; get involved in our many other projects, and of course let us know what you think. If after you have searched, you still cannot find the information you seek, please feel free to contact us or search for answers in the technical thread of the discussion forum once our website is up and running.

Because we are a co-op, we work hard to bring you materials and resources that are effective and inexpensive. The large majority of the money we make off the selling of products or benefit shows goes back into making new products and bringing new art to the mainstream. The little bit left over to feed us ramen noodles and to buy a few postage stamps barely covers the costs of the Alternating Current rental space, so any donation you could give out of the kindness of your creative mind would help us immensely in furthering our efforts to keep art from being just a luxurious afterthought. Please donate what you can by using our paypal address: alt.current@gmail.com; no amount is too small.

We give you many resources and opportunities to make amazing art and to market it to the masses. So you have no excuse. Go make your art. Be the catalyst. Be the change you want to see in this world. Make something amazing out of your mind.

WHAT'S IN A NAME?

What is an alternating current?

In a nutshell, an alternating current (AC) is an electrical current with a magnitude and direction that vary cyclically, as opposed to the constant direction of the direct current. AC systems overcame the limitations of the direct current system used by Thomas Edison to distribute electricity efficiently over long distances. One of the first practical devices to transfer AC power efficiently between isolated circuits was an induction coil, a device using pairs of coils wound on a common iron core, which was an early precursor of the modern transformer. AC voltage can be stepped up or down by a transformer to a different voltage, which leads to significantly more efficient transmission of power. The system used today was devised in the late nineteenth century, largely by Nikola Tesla.

How does this pertain to our co-op?

We think this is the coolest name we could have possibly ever come up with. It not only blends our love of science, art, society, and invention, but it deals with movement, currents, power on the scale of what you put into it is what you get out of it. The alternating current was an invention that helped bring power, electricity, audio, radio from a small scale to a large scale, to residences and businesses, over long distances, to the masses. And that is our aim: to bring d.i.y. art from the small stream to the masses. The name Alternating Current signifies motion, momentum; this is exactly the feeling our co-op encompasses: a lively nature of electricity. The word "alternating" gives the connotation of being something other than the mainstream, and that is precisely what we are: a current going out into society and providing the electrical charge to invoke motivation for something other than the mainstream, providing you with the energy, the momentum, and the tools to change the way you think about art and society, or - at the very least - to make you want to change something you see around you, whether on a small scale or a large scale. We give you the power to be the change.

PAYPAL INFORMATION

You can Paypal us money at the address alt.current@gmail.com. Our old website, to which you are currently being redirected while the new website is being created, does not have a way to pay via credit card. But we do encourage you to do so anyway! It is a bit of a pain in the buttocks, I know, but please feel free to go through all the cart motions like you were going to send a check or money order, get all the shipping info, etc.; then simply cut and paste the entire cart contents, price, etc. into an email, with your name and mailing address, and email it to us at alt.current@gmail.com. You can then manually Paypal us the amount at alt.current@gmail.com, and we will mail you the items once your payment is received. A couple of extra steps right now, I know, and we apologize, but at least it is possible, if you want to purchase items via credit card/Paypal. Sorry for the inconvenience, and please bear with us during this time of transitional chaotic mess.

MAKE CHECKS PAYABLE TO ALTERNATING CURRENT

We now have a new business account set up at a bank in Cambridge, since we moved and had to close down our other one. Please note that checks now need to be made out to ALTERNATING CURRENT. On our old website, it says something different, but please disregard that. While we are building the new site, we do not have time to update the old site that we will no longer be using, so please make the change manually, if you are mailing us checks. Rest assured that our new site will be fully updated with this change.

MONTHLY POSTCARD MAILINGS

We are now mailing out monthly postcards to let people know what's new, in lieu of making catalogs to send in the mail. With internet being as widespread as it is, there is just no need to keep printing catalogs. We will send a postcard with all our new offerings to anyone who has made a purchase or contacted us within the previous month. Twice a year we will send out mass mailings to everyone on our list. If you want to receive the next postcard for January 2008, please email us with your full mailing address, including full name, and the best email address at which to reach you to let you know of new offerings.

THIS IS WHERE WE BEGIN

Hello again, world. This is me, one of your friendly neighborhood anonymous editors at Alternating Current, here to introduce you to our blog. We are building our website from scratch. It is currently in a sad state of repair, so we have thus created a blog as a "what's new in the world of art" and a primary source of communication while our website is taking one for the team. We are hoping it will be done shortly after X-mas. The website can be viewed at alt-current.com, eventually, but right now it will still point you to our old website while the new one is underway. The old website should suffice for the meantime in at least giving you an idea of what we do, but if you want or need more specifics, please contact us. In the next hundred posts or so, I am going to be walking you through each step we are taking with the co-op, each new product and publication we have, and each new feature we have completed on the new website. Ready, set, go!
