ARTOPIA BRINGS ALL-AGES STREET FAIR ART TO SEATTLE

Artopia is an all-day, all-ages, outdoor event in support of local artists that takes place in Seattle's Georgetown neighborhood. Last year's edition included such attractions as Hazard Factory's Power Tool Drag Racing, the Flight To Mars Birthday Cake, a child friendly carnival midway, live music, and some funky gallery shows.

Artopia '08 lands on Saturday, June 28th, 2008, and Ignition Northwest has decided to get behind it all the way in an effort to have a Burning Man-style art extravaganza that is all-ages. Thumbnail sketch: they're going to take over one "zone" of the fair with their own stage, theme camps, and art. And they're putting their money where their [collective] mouth is, with grants for artists and theme camps. Now, they need YOU.

The first step to getting involved is to join the conversation. Make sure you're on SEAVENT, the public event planning list for Seattle-area Burning Man and art-related activities.

To join, send mail to: seavent-subscribe@yahoogroups.com.
For more questions, contact Ivan Cockrum via Ignition Northwest.
More information will follow when more details are known.

NET NEUTRALITY : SAVE THE INTERNET

The continued attempts by certain corporations to create a "fast-lane" on the Internet, available only to high-paying groups or companies, and a defacto "slow-lane" for the rest of us needs to be addressed, and I hope you will join your voice with the many of us fighting for Internet equality.

The issue is "net neutrality," meaning that all users have equal access. This is a founding principle of the Internet. Some corporations, however, want to change that to benefit their bottom line, by creating pay-for-better-access laws.

If you are reading this blog, you are probably an Internet freak. Please check out Save The Internet and contact your Congresspeople so they will know to vote down any Internet-restricting legislation that would eventually affect you by slowing down your Internet access. (Unless, of course, you're rich, in which case, you are probably not reading our blog.)

COUNTDOWN TO KEITH OLBERMANN FOR PRESIDENT: HE GETS MY VOTE!

Keith Olbermann is a fucking genius, and an insightful genius, at that. I want you to watch this video clip from his show denouncing the fear tactics used by Hillary Clinton in her increasingly negative and dirty campaign.

Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow, a very well-spoken MSNBC Political Analyst, slam the fear card, call Hillary out on her Republican-style fear tactics, and show that even her own campaign advisors can't name anything she has done, experienced, or mastered that would keep us safe if there were some "need for fear." The best part, even her own husband, four years ago, denounced her campaign tactics, and told you to vote for Barack Obama, the one who delivers hope Vs. the one who runs a negative and dirty campaign! Maddow discusses Hillary's ambiguity on her "experience" in military, safety, security platforms; how Hillary's tactics are causing more people to gravitate to the Republican side; how her empty resume of how she is so "experienced" that she would be the best choice to lead us into ( ...into what? You decide: insert fear-inducing panic moment here) safety on the false pretense that something MIGHT happen, is so vague and inconsistent; and how, yes, Hillary was in the White House when OTHER PEOPLE were making the decisions, but how does that give her experience on anything firsthand?

Hey, Hillary, why don't you just run for Vice President on the Republican card? You could probably scare enough people into voting for you. Because what America really needs is a leader they can FEAR!!

TEMPERANCE IN MODERATION BY LEAH ANGSTMAN REVIEWED ON NIGHTWAVES WEBSITE

Although it isn't the best review we have ever seen, since it focuses more on the theme of the book, rather than the actual writing content, we are still always happy to get reviews! The book reviewed is a chapbook of poetry centering around a particular love interest: temperance in moderation by leah angstman, published by us and featuring the work of an Alternating Current poet. The reviewer is Nightwaves Website, a reviewer we do not know [we stumbled upon it in a Google search], and whom has thusfar not returned our contact emails.

---

Temperance in Moderation- 2002- Propaganda Press, PO Box 304, Mason, MI, 48854, USA, indiearts@hotmail.com

This is a collection of poetry by Leah Angstman (is that her real name?... sounds like a pen name if I ever heard one!). From what I can tell, every poem in this book is dedicated to Andrew McCauley, whom I'm assuming is very special to Leah. In fact, after a while this sort of became a bit too obsessive for my tastes. Poem after poem dedicated to the greatness of Andrew. I'm sure Andrew is a swell guy, but come on, this sounds like the gushing of a 14 year old with a severe crush. Don't get me wrong, this poetry is far from stupid, in fact Leah does show an able pen, but the subject matter is just too one-sided. I mean, there's one poem called "Andrew is Everything"!!! On one hand, I do hope that Leah and Andrew get married someday, they have kids, and spend the rest of their lives happy. But I also think it is very possible that this young lady will one day regret the fact that she ever wrote this zine. I get rather leery whenever I see anyone being put on a pedestal.

---

A few things, and not just a rebuttal, but just a few things for those who want a more in-depth review:
  • The book can no longer be purchased from this listed address. Propaganda Press can now be reached at Alternating Current, PO Box 398058, Cambridge, MA 02139 USA, alt-current.com, alternating-current.blogspot.com, alt.current@gmail.com.
  • leah angstman does not capitalize her name, which is an anti-proper noun statement that urges the reader to focus more on the writing and the words than the importance of the author. In addition, leah does not capitalize any of her poetry, titles, or poem lines, nor use punctuation in her poems. This is her way of allowing you to take from each poem a unique and personalized experience that is individualized by each reader's differing analysis and perception of each line.
  • Yes, angstman is the author's given last name from her father's German ancestry. No, it is not a pen name.
  • Most of leah's poetry collections center around an individual theme or a group of themes, people, cities, ideas, conceptions: this particular one centers around a particular love at the time. If you do not like themed poetry collections, especially about individual people, character sketches, or personality dissections, then I would suggest reading an anthology of leah's work [aftermath, a woman among the wolves], rather than an individual themed chapbook. She really does have very many different styles: poetry about life on an Indian Reservation [a thousand ghosts], poetry about big cities [chicago in winter, fancy that of london], poetry about travels [next exit], and more. Explore, and you will find something you like.
  • [A slight rebuttal:] leah is not 14 years old, nor does the writing suggest that. Tack on double that amount, and actually read the words, rather than getting hooked up on the subject matter. The works in this particular collection contain some of leah's best words to date.
  • leah does not and will not ever regret writing her poetry collections. They center around a place, moment, person, idea in time; and that feeling in that moment is chronicled forever in words. leah and Andrew are not married and not together, nor were they at the time the book was written. The work, however, does not put the person on a pedestal so much as it shows the passion and wanting of human beings in a certain situation.
  • The chapbook is only available now in short supply while copies last. It is slated for release in the upcoming paperback by leah angstman, january girl, which is a collection of fifteen chapbooks compiled into one that will be available through Propaganda Press upon release.

MESSAGE REGARDING THE SELLING OUT OF CRITICAL MASSIVE TICKETS

Message from the President of Ignition Northwest, Phill Arensberg, about the selling out of Critical Massive tickets in February 2008 [Critical Massive is in June 2008, read more about it here.]:

Over the past few days, I've talked to a bunch of community members, all of who were in various states of distress regarding the tickets (or now, lack thereof) for Critical Massive. At first, I must admit, I was a little frustrated with folks who seemed to be bitching about not being able to put something off until the last minute. I realized though, after some more conversations with people regarding their reasons for not getting tickets this early (money, logistics, etc.), that these folks had valid and decent points. So, in response to peoples' concerns, I wanted to explain why we are sold out in February and why we can't expand the number of available tickets.

Historically, our greatest challenge with Critical Massive has been finding a reliable location that is amenable to our needs: sound, fire, camping, art, etc. Last year, for example, despite the diligent and unflagging efforts of the production team, we were right down to the wire with finding any space for the event at all. This year's location, Skalitude, is very interested in having a long-term relationship with Critical Massive and the Northwest Burner Community. We have been asked by the owners of the land to cap our population at 500 tickets. Since no previous Critical Massive has ever topped that number, we felt that this was an acceptable limit. We have, with Skalitude, an opportunity to establish Critical Massive as a destination event, a true regional burn that can grow with our needs and our ambitions. Pending a successful event this year, we are ready to enter into a long-term agreement with Skalitude that allows for growth and flexibility, both in dates and population.

This year, however, is our litmus test. We need to show what we can do, and I have no doubt that we will, collectively and individually, step up as we always do. Consistently, when we enter into a relationship with an organization or business, there is always an initial uncertainty on their part. Oh, I know all about Burning Man people! Who are these freaks? Why do they want to have fire here? That music seems awfully loud. And without exception, the end result is always the same: You guys are great. This is nicer than when you started. I would work with you people anytime. Once again we have a chance to walk it like we talk it. The downside is that we're sold out in February. I regret that everyone who wants to go can't. I really do. My only response, and I know it doesn't really make it better, is that the decision to set up the tickets this way was given a great deal of thought and discussion and was reached with the best interests of the community in mind.

If anyone has any questions or comments, I am more than happy to talk with you. Again, I'm very sorry that not everyone can go this year, but I truly believe that this location will serve us, all of us, very well for many years to come.

HONK FESTIVAL COMING TO SEATTLE NEEDS YOUR HELP

HONK! WEST, a special event coming to Seattle, March 21 - 23 (Easter weekend), 2008, with 17 activist street bands from five states and Vancouver converging on the cafes, taverns, and streets of Ballard and Georgetown, Washington.

HONK! is a gathering of street musicians for mutual support and appreciation, musical inspiration, forging and deepening human connections. And hopefully, raising public consciousness of the value of this music in our communities.

HOW YOU CAN HELP #1

We have found housing so far for over 60 musicians, and now we have news that one more fabulous band, from NYC, will be coming as well:

CAN YOU OFFER THESE PUPPIES A HOME?

The Hungry March Band is bringing 15 musicians, all needing a place to crash for the weekend. If you or anyone you know can help out with this, please let Lesli know (include your address). Ideally, HMB will all be in one huge house/yard, somewhere in the Wallingford/Fremont/Ballard area. But we will be grateful to find two houses near each other, in any neighborhood.

The musicians will generally be participating in HONK activities from 10 a.m. to midnight, so there is little hosting required besides providing a place to sleep and perhaps shower. Hosts will have passes to the indoor shows and 15 new friends.

HOW YOU CAN HELP #2

Please come help us cook or help out in the kitchen for a meal.

Ballard Odd Fellows Hall will be our hospitality center, where we will offer 100+ musicians three meals a day. Friday dinner, Saturday lunch and dinner, and Sunday brunch (probably pot-luck) all need helpers.

OTHER WAYS:

A truck or van with driver, willing to help see that folks get to their host houses safely after the shows, or to do an airport pick-up, or to help carry us all from Ballard to Georgetown Saturday evening.

Please spread the news, join the festivities in Ballard Friday night, March 21, 2008, and in Georgetown Saturday night. Pass this post around.

All volunteers, of course, will have passes to the indoor shows and are welcome to join us for meals and workshops.

HONK YOU!

EARTH LIBERATION FRONT: ECOTERRORISM DOES EQUALLY AS MUCH DAMAGE

On Monday, March 3, 2008, in Woodinville, Washington, near Seattle, a fire believed to be the ecoterrorist work of the ELF [Earth Liberation Front] engulfed many $2 million dollar homes on the famous "Street of Dreams."

Read more about the fire on CNN and a great article on Seattle's King 5.

Although it has not yet been proven whether the fires were caused by the ELF, it is definite that they are the work of ecoterrorism: signs reading "Built green? Nope black!", using references such as "McMansion," and bearing the letters ELF, most likely the initials of the Earth Liberation Front, were found at the site, and suspicious explosive devices were found inside and near the homes.

So, now I'm going to rant about ecoterrrorism. If you are too quote unquote green to see beyond the end of your nose and lighter, then you may not want to read on, because I am about to insult you. Although you should read on, because I am about to make you smarter.

I have had enough of hippies with fucking lighters and the idea that massive air pollution and endangering lives is the way to get your green message across. I am all for being green, don't get me wrong; I do all kinds of educational things to teach others the green way, and I am careful to implement them in my own home, office, work space, business practices, and daily life.

But what does burning accomplish? First of all, the owners will rebuild the homes. The arsonists have only destroyed a physical thing that can and will be rebuilt. This means TWICE the usage of trees and materials, destruction of forests and resources...because of the arsonists, not helped by the arsonists. This means TWICE as much gas, fuel, power, energy, emissions used by machinery to rebuild. And let's not forget the machinery that first has to FURTHER DESTROY what you have destroyed, which will equal almost FOUR, FIVE, SIX TIMES the gas, fuel, power, energy, emissions to flatten the homes down to foundations, remove the debris, and start the rebuilding process again.

Second of all, these fires were supposedly in retaliation to claims that the houses were built green, something the ecoterrorists apparently didn't believe, based on the sign found at the scene. My question is: Why are you retaliating against someone who is trying to take steps to be greener? Okay, maybe the houses aren't perfectly green, but one of the people involved in the 2007 Street of Dreams said the homes used "Built Green" standards such as water-pervious sidewalks, super-insulated walls and windows, and products made with recycled materials, such as carpet pads. Advertising for last summer's Street of Dreams focused on the environmentally friendly aspects of the homes, which were smaller than some of the huge houses featured in years past.

"The environmental part of the house was a passion of mine," said Grey Lundberg, a builder of one of the houses. "We've put a lot into this house." Lundberg said he cannot understand why an environmental group would strike the home he built. It incorporated the latest in eco-friendly standards and even won environmental awards.

So maybe the homes aren't 100% everything green we could ever want, but I don't have water-pervious sidewalks or super-insulated walls and windows to conserve energy in my house... so small steps are better than none at all. Why are these the people a group would want to retaliate against, while there are so many worse things going on in the world? Not to mention the fact that the Street of Dreams supports two awesome charities: the Children's Home Society of Washington and the Make-A-Wish Foundation of the Northwest.

And what about when you're wrong? At the same time these fires were going on, a federal jury in Tacoma, Washington, was deliberating in the case of another accused ELF activist, Briana Waters, who could face at least 35 years if convicted of helping to firebomb the University of Washington's Center for Urban Horticulture in 2001, which caused $7 million in damage. The horticulture center was targeted because the ELF activists MISTAKENLY believed researchers there were genetically engineering trees. Think about this: a supposed eco group BOMBED a HORTICULTURE center! What are they thinking? I seriously hope she spends those 35 years so she can think about the stupidity of this action, which takes me to my final and, in my opinion, most important, statement:

When you burn something, do you have ANY IDEA how much carbon you are releasing into the air? Here are a few stats for you: A wildfire can release enough carbon dioxide into the atmosphere that it can match an entire state's ANNUAL vehicle emissions in a few weeks [citation]. Every year, fires burn 3 million to 4 million square kilometers of Earth’s land surface area, and release more than a billion tons of carbon into the atmosphere in the form of carbon dioxide [citation]. These ecoterrorists, and no, I don't mind using that term at all, are causing at least equal to, if not more than, the amount of damage caused from just building the house in the first place. These carbon emissions pollute the air, destroy foliage and fresh water, and damage our lungs, livers, and brains. So what's the use in trading in one evil for another? What does that prove? What does that teach people? That you are an asshole? That you can cause a little stir for a little while that doesn't really solve anything or get any actions or solutions implemented, other than your jail time? That causing your own environmental damage, possible injuries to firefighters and bystanders, and pollution to the air and earth is okay if YOU do it, but not if someone else does it? You can't cherrypick environmental damage; you are either defending it peacefully, or you are just as much a part of the problem.

And last, but not least, my final rant: hypocrisy. It is the one thing I cannot ignore in people who talk louder than they should. So the ELF News website has ads for Prescription Free Viagra, the Florida Swinger's Convention, and Download Shield to allow you to download copyrighted software from the Internet. My favorite part is where they talk about not having to deal with all that Corporate bullshit (brought to you by the Internet Pharmacy). In the words of one of my favorite columnist /bloggers /ranters, Marni Soupcoff on Full Comment: "[If] environmentalists are going to go around risking lives and trampling on property rights in the name of Mother Earth, then the least they could do is shell out a couple of dollars to protect their own domain name and make a bit of an effort to get their message across." [Check out Marni's take on this subject, too; she rocks.]

That is all I have to say about this. I could rant forever, but I am too angry to do so, and I couldn't change any more minds if they are already set on the irony of destruction of the Earth in an "effort" to preserve it.

----------
Take REAL ACTION that makes a difference:

The Building Industry Association of Washington and the FBI are offering a $100,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for this crime. Anyone who has knowledge of these fires is asked to call the Arson Hotline (800-55-ARSON) or contact authorities. Callers may remain anonymous.
