FREE HEALTH SCREENINGS FOR UNINSURED WASHINGTON ARTISTS

UNINSURED INDIVIDUAL ARTISTS GET FREE HEALTH SCREENINGS, THANKS TO A NOVEL PARTNERSHIP

Washington Artists Health Insurance Project (WAHIP) and Qliance sponsor one-day event to promote accessible healthcare.

Individual artists from all creative disciplines across King County [Washington] have an opportunity to receive a free health screening on March 15, 2008, at Qliance, a monthly-fee primary care clinic based in Seattle, thanks to the clinic and to the Washington Artists Health Insurance Project (WAHIP). This one-day health screening is being offered as part of an innovative partnership with Qliance, a new primary and preventative care clinic that operates outside of the traditional health insurance arena. The screening will include a glucose test, blood pressure measurement, a BMI calculation, and a cholesterol test. Free copies of the newly published Health Care Guide for Artists, a brochure of state-wide health resources, will also be available onsite.

The Health Care Guide for Artists, developed by WAHIP and Artist Trust in partnership with The Actors' Fund, brings together information that assists artists in understanding the health coverage landscape in Washington. It clarifies current options and opportunities, while underscoring the limitations that exist, especially for self-employed and freelance artists who can not avail of employer health care plans.

"The healthcare crisis is at the forefront this election year because many hardworking people—especially artists—cannot afford the rising cost of individual insurance plans, so they go without or pay through the nose" said Fidelma McGinn, Executive Director of Artist Trust, which leads WAHIP, an initiative working to improve artists' access to health coverage in Washington State. "These free screenings and the new Health Care Guide are part of a larger WAHIP effort that provides some important steps by helping artists better understand their coverage options while getting some affordable care. We hope to help spark bigger healthcare reforms."

There are approximately 22,000 artists in Washington State and, according to WAHIP's data, nearly half of them do not have adequate health insurance and a third or more have delayed treatment for a medical problem in the past 12 months because of costs. WAHIP includes two dozen representatives from arts and cultural organizations that are connected to thousands of individual artists.

"Health bills are a strain for most people and especially for artists. Many of us live hand-to-mouth, often holding down several jobs in order to make our artwork," said Susan Kunimatsu, an artist and WAHIP Steering Committee member. "WAHIP is working to keep us from falling through the cracks and into further debt. We can't fight the system on our own."

Space is limited. Interested artists should contact Qliance to reserve your spot at (206) 913-4771 or rsvp@qliance.com. Provide your name and arrival time, and "RSVP" in the subject line of the e-mail. If you're a musician, you may be eligible to participate in a more in-depth health evaluation on March 22, 2008, provided by MusiCares and Qliance. For more information contact MusiCares at 1-800-687-4227.

For members of the media: To attend a screening, speak with organizers or artists, contact Fidelma McGinn, (206) 467-8734 x12, or toll free: 1-866-218-7878.

The Washington Artists Health Insurance Project is an effort to forge new strategies to improve artists' access to health insurance in Washington State. The project serves as a model for other state-based health insurance efforts to extend benefits to artists working in all disciplines. WAHIP is a pilot project of Leveraging Investments in Creativity (LINC), which works to improve the living and working conditions of artists, in partnership with Artist Trust, and supported with funding from the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation, the Ford Foundation, and the Nathan Cummings Foundation. For additional information or to view WAHIP research, go here.

Artist Trust is a not-for-profit organization whose sole mission is to support and encourage individual artists working in all disciplines in order to enrich community life throughout Washington State.

MASSACHUSETTS FOR OBAMA: HELP NEEDED

The significant victories in Hawaii and Wisconsin have changed the dynamic of this race once again. Because of this, the Obama campaign has asked the New England state to focus all available resources on winning Rhode Island and Vermont in landslide victories. If you are not sleeping or working, they need you to be making calls to one of these two states and to come with them on weekends to knock on doors. The single most important thing that a Massachusetts volunteer can do to help win this election is help volunteers from Connecticut, New Hampshire, and Maine win the last two New England primaries.

FUNNY BUSH POEM OF THE DAY

Circulating on the Internet for some time, this is a short poem made up entirely of actual quotations from George W. Bush. These have been arranged, only for aesthetic purposes, by Washington Post writer Richard Thompson.

MAKE THE PIE HIGHER

I think we all agree, the past is over.
This is still a dangerous world.
It's a world of madmen
And uncertainty
And potential mental losses.

Rarely is the question asked
Is our children learning?
Will the highways of the Internet
Become more few?
How many hands have I shaked?

They misunderestimate me.
I am a pit-bull on the pantleg of opportunity.
I know that the human being and the fish
Can coexist.

Families is where our nation finds hope,
Where our wings take dream.
Put food on your family!
Knock down the tollbooth!
Vulcanize society!
Make the pie higher!
Make the pie higher!

WOMEN FOR BARACK OBAMA

As a woman, I can say that, NO, not every woman wants Hillary Clinton in office just because she is a woman. We at Alternating Current are all voting for Barack Obama and endorse him firmly, and the majority of us here are women. So, ladies, now is the time to stand up for REAL women's rights, which is the ability to say that putting a woman in office is not going to turn any tides for women. I am not a feminist; I believe in equality for both sexes, and I think our time is not "coming," but that it is already here. Look around you, and be proud to take a stand for change. The real change lies in the ability to see the big picture and to place your precious vote where it counts; do not just vote for Hillary because she is a woman. Vote for change in this country as a whole, regardless of sex, race, religion, etc. Vote for change in this country based on the issues and facts. If you are a woman reading this, truly empower yourself: join Women for Barack Obama and make your voice heard among the millions of women who feel the same.

Go support AWESOME musician and friend of the co-op, John Aruda, as he backs this fab duo on saxophone.

----------

PRESS RELEASE:
On Saturday, February 23, 2008, soulful duo Dwight & Nicole (Dwight Ritcher & Nicole Nelson) celebrate the lives of legends Ray Charles & Betty Carter with an evening of music at the Regattabar, Harvard Square, MA, for two shows: 7:30 & 10:00 p.m. Tickets are $18.00.

In 1961, Ray Charles invited (then-unknown) jazz singer Betty Carter into the studio for a live recording of 12 love songs. The result was a groundbreaking 78-minute collection of duets. "The inspiration was contagious," claimed the album producer (and longtime Charles collaborator), Sid Feller. Now, 47 years later, NYC soul duo Dwight & Nicole will honor Ray and Betty, joined by an all-star group, including Tom West on piano, John Lockwood on bass, Marty Richards on drums, Jeff Galindo on trombone, and John & Scott Aruda on tenor saxophone & trumpet, respectively. Expect to hear renditions of classic duets such as "Baby, It's Cold Outside" and "People Will Say We're in Love," as well as Betty's hit "Mean To Me," and Ray's ubiquitous "Night Time is the Right Time."

Fans of Dwight Ritcher & Nicole Nelson may recall a time when they each fronted their own popular bands earlier in the decade. Forging their way up from pubs to theaters, they played music at a level which belied their years. Dwight Ritcher, a New Jersey native, moved to Boston and formed the Dwight Ritcher Band. The singer/songwriter & guitarist tapped his deep blues and funk roots to front a high energy, horn-driven group, eventually recording two highly acclaimed, if not chart-topping albums; Drive Around Town and Radioman. Often sharing the stage with such greats as Otis Rush, Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, and Buddy Guy, Ritcher carved out his own musical niche and gained a loyal fan base.

Rising up at the same time from a crowd of Boston area vocalists was Nicole Nelson. A standout soul singer from the start, described as "Magnificent" by Maya Angelou, and "A voice for the ages" by the Boston Phoenix; Nelson and her band churned out crowd-crushing Etta James & Aretha covers during the first half of her 7-year career. Over time, she developed her own unique sound as a songwriter. After a move back to her hometown, Brooklyn, NY, in 2004, Nelson teamed up with Ritcher. Blending their voices to create a very original music; the Dwight & Nicole duo was formed.

The versatility of their current incarnation allows them the luxury of creative options. Some live shows reveal a stripped down duo, just Ritcher's guitar and Nelson's percussion supporting their rich vocals and carrying the crowd. Other shows find them fronting full big bands together, 1940's style. The latter is like stepping into a time warp- no strangers to jazz & swing, Dwight & Nicole recall Jimmy Rushing & Ella Fitzgerald. For fans of that musical era, this is a show to catch. A closer listen reveals inflections of Patsy Cline, BB King, Johnny Cash, & Nina Simone. And of course, the real magic is in that non-definable extra something; the element of surprise which keeps the music fresh and very alive: a necessary ingredient when interpreting the songs of such personalities as Ray Charles & Betty Carter.

THE WORLD OF POLITICS: A POEM FROM MY FATHER

My father, Jeff Angstman, is not a poet. But he did write some awesome words when we were discussing the possibility of Democrats in the White House Vs. Republicans. And his words are wise, when he says that, donkeys or elephants, we still have to keep watch over the government to be sure they are working for us, because both parties have spotty records, as well as a lot of cleaning up to do once one of them gets to Office.

Here is the poem from my father, just as a "thought for the day" about both sides of the issue, and another little reminder of how badly we need governmental change to improve the direction of this country. And, although I still count myself a Democrat over a Republican, I would never give myself blindly to one side over another without cause.

As mentioned before, we here at Alternating Current are voting for Barack Obama. Not because he is a Democrat, but because we really believe in his ability to bring change, to heal a broken nation, to listen to all people from all walks of life, to inspire people to care about the future of this country once again. But this decision does not come without the knowledge of knowing there is another side, knowing it is an uphill climb and that there will be battles lost before any battle can be won. My father's poem refuses to take one side over the other, which is admirable and has a strong sense of truth to it. We are taking a side because we feel, at this time, that this is what needs to happen to bring change, a uniting of the voices of the people. But listen to the words of my father, for they are wise -- and trust us, even hoping for the change for which we are voting, we WILL be keeping our eyes on everyone "in charge" for the rest of our lives to be sure they are working FOR US, and not the other way around. We believe Barack Obama will bring about that change.

And without further ado, here are some wise and beautiful words from my father, even if you don't agree with them all:

The World of Politics

I have lived through 58 yrs.
Democrats and Republicans, Ike, W, JFK, Dirty Dick, Slick Willie, all alike.
They take your money.
They make wars and kill your children all the same.
Your vote is courted every 4 years and they love you.
To them it is just a big nasty game.
Middle class taxes are theirs to bloat their big egos.
They are rich guys who look down their noses at us and laugh.
Because we are so stupid that we think this is a democracy.
They own our thoughts and try to tell us what must be important.
What is really important is sunrise, beauty, love of family, the blast of wind that that bike puts in your face, sunset, birth, death, seeing your child after a long absence, real freedom, rainstorms
These politicians will not own me.
None of them do anything that helps the middle or lower classes.
Both parties can kiss our asses.
Remember what I say that JFK killed my classmates in Nam ... and he was a donkey.
What is that fed budget today?
They both spend us into oblivion.
Not wonderful servants but scum with disdain for us.
Sneering as they remove our freedoms. What next? Neck chips for our own safety.
Perhaps barbed wire around our houses and a night curfew to protect us?
Military checkpoints into Oregon.
Old people with no way to support themselves living in culverts.
Rounded up and thrown into poor-prisons....or soylent green or orange.
Better to learn to loathe them all, for they loathe and fear you and your power of thought.
-Dad

ART GRANTS FOR CRITICAL MASSIVE EVENT, PACIFIC NORTHWEST

IF YOU ARE NOT YET FAMILIAR WITH CRITICAL MASSIVE, CLICK HERE FOR MORE INFORMATION.

The following information is the latest in art grant information for Critical Massive, the large art / camping / workshop gathering in Seattle in June 2008. Check here for any updates to the art grant information.
------

This year you will be asked about your environmental impact, so give this some serious thought. This event takes place in a pristine valley that is solar powered, and they HIGHLY encourage you to consider your environmental options and footprint this year.

Key dates:
----------------------------------------------
Submission period opens: Feb 15, 2008
Submission period closes: Feb 25, 2008
Announcement of grant recipients: Mar 10, 2008
----------------------------------------------

For 2008, they've changed the granting structure a bit from previous years: in addition to the primary art grant process known from years past (and detailed below), they're also offering two new types of grants:

Workshop grants
----------------------------------------------
These are intended to encourage performers and artisans to share their valued skills with the rest of the community. If you're a performer or artist with skills to share, and are already intending to bring some infrastructure with you to CM, these grants can provide a way to help defray some of the costs of transport, while providing more interaction opportunities for everyone in attendance.

Microgrants
----------------------------------------------
The intent of the Microgrant is to encourage art throughout the event, in ways not typically thought for arts grants. These grants, limited to $100 each, require only a narrative of the project along with any visual description you can provide. There will only be five of these Microgrants granted in 2008. Surprise us!

Artist Tickets

A limited number of subsidized Artist Tickets will be available this year for $30. Applicants will be chosen based on level of participation. First options will go to Art Grant and Workshop Applicants, with performer applications being decided on a first come first served basis for the remaining. CM2k8 tickets WILL sell out, so if you are unsure if you will get one, BUY ONE NOW!

Submission Requirements
----------------------------------------------
To be considered for an art grant for Critical Massive 2008, artists must submit all of the following:

Cover Letter:
In the cover letter, artists should:
* Indicate the reason for their interest in the project and briefly describe their approach;
* Include the artist's name, mailing address, daytime phone number, and email address. If a collaborative project, include all participating artists' names, but indicate which is to be the primary contact.
* Include a brief biographical summary of each collaborator, indicating the artists' past experiences with related work, past grants, web site portfolios if they are available, etc.
* Include a short statement of the project's environmental footprint, including power, fuel, and/or alternate energy sources. Please address how you are sourcing and disposing of materials and your plan for LNT (leave no trace) after the event.

Written Project Proposal, not to exceed two pages:
Artists should:
* Describe their proposal for this project, addressing visual impact, materials, interactivity, installation method, and any other information that would help to explain the proposal.
* Describe how the project incorporates the goals of Ignition Northwest, to foster community through the construction of participatory art that embodies the Burning Man spirit of both radical self-expression and cross-disciplinary collaboration.
* Describe how issues of public safety, vandalism, and maintenance will be addressed in the design and materials.
* Describe the area size (including fire perimeter that you require, if any) and if you have any other site specific needs such as power, water, and permits.
* If fire is a part of your piece, please describe how you have fire safety support.
* If your project is not active all the time, please indicate what time(s) of day your piece will be active, and whether you intend to have a scheduled event.

Budget:
* Include a budget that summarizes the cost of materials, transportation, installation, etc. Be sure to include in your budget some indication of the value in time and resources that have already been committed to the project by the contributors.

Visual Materials: (not to exceed two pages)
* Artists should submit a drawing or some clear visual representation of the proposed artwork. If artists prefer to build a three-dimensional model for this proposal, they can photograph the model and include the photograph with the printed materials or as one of the images submitted as work examples.

Photodocumentation of past representative work:
* Please include up to ten digital images of previously completed and/or representative work, numbered according to a completed image list. For collaborative projects, representative works may be drawn from different collaborators. Digital images must be submitted as email attachments or as a link to a web site, with the latter preferred. If images are submitted as email attachments, each should be saved as an individual 300 dpi JPEG file, no larger than 1MB.
* Clearly provide a list of images with title and associated file name or URL, and a sentence describing each image.

WHY WE NEED CHANGE; CONGRESS AT LOWEST APPROVAL RATING

If you ever needed a reason why we so desperately need change in this country, it is not just because our nation's President is at the lowest popular rating by his own people since his inauguration, but also because Congress is, as well.  At the time this post was made, the President sits at a 28% approval rating, and Congress sits below that, with a 24% approval rating.  [Some polls will vary in results, depending on people polled, but these numbers had the most consensus.]

But if you ever really needed a reason to believe we need change in this country, then let me leave you with this quote, spoken by our very own President George W. Bush, in his FOXNews interview this past Sunday, February 10, 2008:

"It's very hard to write the future history of America before the current history hasn't been fully written."

Sigh.  Gosh bless America.
